Artifact 6

This final artifact is an attempt to demonstrate ongoing research and how to apply it to an industry and richer content. The gathering of research and practice has produced a thorough acknowledgment of which is assembled in one final artifact.
The first scene of "Who framed Roger Rabbit" by Robert Semeckis, was selected to be overdubbed with Foley and sound effects. The scene is rich of this content and is a perfect example to illustrate what and why audio is essential to an effectively dramatized piece of animation.
The scene is three minutes and a quarter long and has plenty of realistic and fictive sounds. A great use of plug-ins used in Protools and effects have been applied to recordings to control and alter them. Animation allows a different approach to audio as fictive sounds can be created to embellish an action. Instrumental sounds can suit situations and actions as well but i did not create a musical track in this sense. These fictive sounds add to the meaning of the story as well as the action they are synchronized to. Sounds can convey emotions.
I have found that merging different sounds together in different ways to create realer than real sound, very interesting. This aspect of designing sound is very creative. Much more time was needed to research the content because the clip was longer than previous artifacts. Which sounds where going to be recorded from what they actually were. which sounds were going to be acted out as Foley. Where to add fictive sound effects. Where to enhance sounds depending on the way the story develops. What can be seen as one sound, is in fact several, layered together. By using envelope modifiers, you can decide when the apparent part of each layer choses off it quality.
For example, in the scene where the baby escapes the pen, he bends the bars which is actually layers of twigs and branches being twisted. This is a realistic sound. But when the baby lets go of the bars and is propelled, the oscillated sound from the bars coming back to their original position is dramatized or OTT. Originally taken from a metallic ruler flicked from the side of a table, the same sound can be reproduced using a delay effect. But the first option give a more organic sound.
When Roger rabbit is attacked by the knives a reverse reverb was inserted just before the actual sounds of the knifes stabbing into the wall. This is a dramatizing effects which accentuates the story line of dramatic events.
